i'm overwhelmed and jet lagged, and i've been speaking another language all day, so this entry might be a little choppy, but i figured you kids would want to know what i'm up to. so here we go:
israel ruuuuuules. i'm five minutes from the beach, the weather is beautiful, there are cats everywhere, and i'm all on my own. it's pretty wild.
i'm the youngest one here at ulpan. there are a lot of 19 - 20 somethings, and then a bunch of 30+ folks. people are from france, russia, hungary, turkey, japan, brazil, india, sweden, germany, romania, poland, england, australia, and a bunch of other places. some are new immigrants, and others, like myself, are just here to learn. they call us the "tourists."
today we had placement testing. i'm in kitah aleph plus! wooooo. my teacher gilah is tiny and covered in freckles, but she's tough. word on the street is she's a really good teacher, so i'm happy about that.
tonight me and the kids are going to ze cinema (as they pronounce it).
right now, though, it's time for a serious nap. |

so i finally got my schedule all settled and figured out.
i'm taking:
crossing borders: the mysteries of identity american women in the 1950s hebrew I environment and society
i'm also taking a mini course about the israeli-palestinian conflict and an exco course called "at the drive-in : b-movies of the 50s and 60s."
other than that, i've been getting into my co-op jobs, jamming ukulele style, watching pete and pete, and talking with a russian accent.
let the good times roll, my friends.

So I'm officially going to be the jewiest person at Oberlin.
I'm eating in the kosher/halal co-op.
And I'm living here:
Johnson/Hebrew Heritage House

-29 students total -5 singles, 9 open doubles, 2 triples -Open to all class standings -Coed by room -Fully equipped kitchen -Joseph Elias Memorial Library of program related materials and two lounges -Live-in Program Director and strong affiliation with Jewish Studies department
Jewiest details underlined for emphasis.
Situated on one of the two hills in Oberlin, it is a stately, three-story mansion. Rooms are spacious and irregularly shaped, with high ceilings and large windows. The house contains a Judaic library and is affiliated with the Jewish Studies department, staffed by a programming assistant. Two large, elegant lounges host a variety of programming that ranges from the Chanukah dance party to small and informal discussions with guest speakers on topics exploring Jewish identity. The spacious front yard and proximity to the arboretum make the House ideal for outdoor barbeques and Jewish-themed environmental events. Hebrew House has no language requirement, although residents and others have the opportunity to meet regularly in the house to speak Hebrew. While generally a quiet place to live and study, during program evenings and social events the house is filled with spirited activity. Hebrew House programming has no dining component. |

everyone should listen to "silver rider" by low. just lie back and let it wash over you.
it's one of those songs. |

much ado was soooooo good! i was thoroughly impressed. even though the keystone theater department is so very small, them kiddos really pulled off a wonderful show. definitely one of the best high school plays i've seen.
my props to everyone who was involved! |

i'm done with college applications!
whew.
where all did i end up applying, you ask?
oberlin tufts swarthmore northwestern hobart and william smith bard
and i decided not to early decision oberlin...just because i feel like i'd want to keep my options open.
so now all there is to do it sit and wait 'till april. one thing is for certain - cold winters. i need to go heavy coat searching.
i'm so glad the truly painful part of the college application process is over with. |
